In cases where the walls of the trunk or trunk lid are to be lined with padding or similar cushioning materials, it is necessary to line the interior surface of such walls with a suitable material having a higher level of resilience than that of the padding material and which is bonded to such material, such as a fiberglass band.
A tool and method have been developed which is intended for installation of the band to the interior surface of such trunk wall. This tool and method enables easy installation of the band after the interior surface has been prepared with an adhesive or some other mounting agent and before the interior surface is lined with the cushioning padding material.
The tool and method comprises a tool which is intended to be inserted into the trunk wall at a position near a first corner of the trunk wall. A laterally extending flange is provided at an outwardly extending edge of the tool which is intended to be inserted into the trunk wall. A first end of the tool is provided with a surface having a small dimension, such as a surface having a width which is less than the diameter of the interior surface of the trunk wall. This tool may be designed to enable the flange to be inserted into the trunk wall so as to lie against the interior surface of the trunk wall at a position which is generally adjacent to the first corner of the trunk wall. Such surface having a small dimension is provided at the first end of the tool so that when the tool is inserted into the trunk wall the flange lies against the first corner of the trunk wall. Such small dimensioned surface of the tool is intended to extend outwardly of the trunk wall for a distance which is less than the thickness of the fiberglass band to be inserted into the trunk wall to lie between the first corner of the trunk wall and the edge of the flange.
The flange of the tool is provided with a surface which is suitable for bonding to the padding material of the trunk or trunk lid wall, and for bonding to the band of fiberglass material which is to be inserted into the wall.
The flange of the tool is also provided with a surface which is suitable for bonding to the interior surface of the trunk wall, and which is intended to be pressed against the interior surface of the trunk wall. This surface of the flange is provided with a groove which is substantially parallel to the surface of the flange which is intended to be pressed against the interior surface of the trunk wall. The groove is provided so as to provide a path for passage of the padding material and
